Fiat e Opel hanno sottoscritto un accordo per la fornitura di veicoli, nello specifico van. Le vetture, basate sulla stessa piattaforma dei modelli Fiat Doblò, verranno prodotte in Turchia, nello stabilimento Tofas, a Bursa, lo stesso dove viene prodotto il Doblò, e vendute dai concessionari Vauxhall e Opel in Europa e in altri mercati al di fuori dell’area Nafta da gennaio 2012. Il modello in cantiere sostituirà il veicolo commerciale Combo della Opel e rappresenta un’alleanza industriale di grande impatto mediatico, visti i precedenti contrattuali e finanziari tra Fiat e General Motors, con la seconda costretta tempo fa a liquidare la casa torinese per il mancato esercizio dell’opzione sulla sua acquisizione. Per la nuova gamma di veicoli Vauxhall ed Opel conserveranno il nome Combo, che comprenderà anche tutta una serie di derivati come le versioni Combi e Cargo ed altri veicoli da trasformazione. Fiat prevede una fornitura iniziale di circa 6.000 veicoli nel 2011, per arrivare gradualmente ad almeno 250.000 unità. Nel solo stabilimento Tofas, joint-venture tra Fiat e Koc Holding, il numero complessivo di veicoli prodotti raggiungerà circa 1,3 milioni di unità. Il team di progettazione di Opel-Vauxhall a Rüsselsheim, Germania, sta partecipando attivamente allo sviluppo dei nuovi modelli insieme al gruppo di progettazione e design di Fiat Group Automobiles a Torino. Dopo l’ingresso nel segmento dei Suv con l’acquisita Chrysler, il Lingotto è pronto a rafforzare la sua presenza in quello dei van, grazie ad un’alleanza con un marchio considerato uno dei suoi maggiori competitor europei. Che quella dichiarazione “tutti si alleano con tutti” di Marchionne sottendesse questa od occorre aspettarsi altre sorprese?

General Motors said today it would hire 1,000 engineers and researchers in Michigan over the next two years to develop more electric cars and hybrids as it launched its battery-powered Chevrolet Volt.

"Volt clearly demonstrates that we are well on our way and it is especially true when it comes to the electrification of the automobile," GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson said at a ceremony marking the start of production of the plug-in hybrid.

The Volt, which tops the Toyota Prius for fuel economy, is a first-of-its-kind vehicle that GM has touted as a symbol of its commitment to pushing for gains in fuel efficiency and developing new technology.

Akerson drove on stage in the first commercially made Volt at the ceremony to mark the start of the car's production, three years after the automaker announced the closely watched project.

Akerson said GM wanted to be in the forefront of new vehicle technology--starting with the development of powerful battery packs and electric motors--that promises to reduce oil consumption.

The Volt is designed to run for 35 miles on a full charge of its 400-pound lithium ion battery pack supplied by a unit of Korea's LG Chem.

After that, the car is powered by a 1.4-liter engine that gives drivers an estimated 379 miles of driving range.

Some critics had questioned whether the Volt would survive GM's restructuring in bankruptcy in 2009 because of its high cost and the low profit margin on the first shipments of the $41,000 car.

GM North American chief Mark Reuss compared the development of the Volt to a NASA "moon shot." He said the effort, including more than $700 million in new investment, had "created the new soul of GM."

GM will begin shipping the Volt in limited numbers in December. The automaker plans to expand shipments of the Volt to more markets in 2011 and will also start to export the vehicle, Akerson said.

The Volt, which has won honors as Motor Trend Car of the Year and Green Car of the Year, is the first in a number of electric or partly electric cars to arrive over the next two years.

The growing segment also includes the all-electric Nissan Leaf and upcoming rechargeable cars from Toyota and Ford.

GM introduced a concept version of the Volt at the Detroit auto show in 2007 and started production this month at a plant that straddles Detroit and the city of Hamtramck, Mich.

The automaker started development work on the vehicle that would become the Volt in 2006 at the urging of then product development chief Bob Lutz.

The event to mark the start of Volt production is the first major event for GM since its record-setting $23 billion initial public offering of shares earlier this month.

Parte oggi il conto alla rovescia per lo spin-off della principale società manifatturiera italiana: se lo scorporo scatterà materialmente il 3 gennaio 2011, già ora sono chiare le linee principali di una rivoluzione che scandirà una delle operazioni industriali più imponenti degli ultimi anni dando vita a due colossi che si chiameranno Fiat e Fiat Industrial. Questa mattina le società riceveranno i due nuovi marchi aziendali, entrambi in rigoroso blu sabaudo, (ma quelli su auto e camion non cambiano) e oggi l’amministratore delegato Sergio Marchionne illustrerà la svolta a un centinaio di analisti che da tempo attendono di mettere a fuoco i dettagli della suddivisione dell’eredità che Fiat Holding si appresta ad assicurare alle due aziende ”sorelle”. L’appuntamento, all’indomani dell’annuncio dell’investimento da 1 miliardo di Fiat e Chrysler per il rilancio dello stabilimento di Mirafiori sul quale oggi si aprirà la trattativa sindacale, servirà a Marchionne anche per tastare le attese che si stanno formando attorno all’operazione. Ai collaboratori che gli hanno potuto parlare ha ripetuto una frase chiave pronunciata tempo fa in tv e passata inosservata: «Noi vogliamo investire molto in Italia ma non vogliamo più essere prigionieri dell’Italia». Parole che meglio di altre delineano la svolta industrial-finanziaria ma anche culturale nel quale lo spin-off si inquadra: sia Fiat che Fiat Industrial restano italiane ma al tempo stesso si aprono definitivamente al mondo e a nuovi partner. Tanto che l’Economist pochi giorni fa ha apertamente parlato di americanizzazione di Fiat. In realtà, la possibile fusione fra Fiat e Chrysler è solo uno degli scenari all’orizzonte, tant’è vero che Fiat Industrial non è neanche nata e già fioccano le indiscrezioni su possibili accordi nel settore dei camion pesanti fra Iveco e giganti del calibro di Daimler, Volvo Truck o l’americana Agco. Già, ma cosa sarà impacchettato in concreto dentro gli scatoloni delle due nuove Fiat? Fiat - che manterrà i dipendenti dell’attuale holding, l’auto (Fiat Group Automobiles), gran parte dei motori Powertrain, Ferrari, Maserati, la componentistica di Marelli, gli acciai di Teksid e la robotica Comau - si articolerà su 119 stabilimenti e 130 mila dipendenti per un fatturato 2010 stimato in 35 miliardi di euro. Fiat Industrial, invece, concentrerà le macchine agricole e movimento terra marchiate Cnh (Case/New Holland), i camion Iveco e i grandi motori e i propulsori marini di Powertrain. Il tutto per un fatturato 2010 di circa 20 miliardi assicurato da 61 mila dipendenti distribuiti in 69 fabbriche nel mondo. Nell’immediato, per gran parte dei 73.698 lavoratori italiani impiegati in 45 siti produttivi cambierà poco: seguiranno il destino già tracciato delle loro società. Diverso è il caso dei lavoratori della Powertrain, uno dei gioielli “inventato” da Marchionne appena arrivò al Lingotto, che produce oltre 3 milioni di propulsori l’anno venduti oltre che a Fiat ad altri 16 costruttori mondiali. In questo caso lo spin-off spaccherà la società come una mela (solo sul piano giuridico e finanziario) assegnando poco meno della metà dei 13.133 dipendenti italiani a Fiat Industrial (a partire da quelli delle fabbriche di Foggia, Torino e Pregnana Milanese) mentre i restanti addetti ai motori (Termoli, Pratola Serra, Verrone e ancora Torino) rimarranno nell’orbita auto e quindi in Fiat. Analogo discorso nel resto del mondo dove le sei fabbriche che producono propulsori per camion e trattori seguiranno Fiat Industrial e le cinque legate ai motori di cilindrata più modesta saranno inglobati in Fiat. Secondo tutti gli analisti l’obiettivo industriale della gigantesca operazione è chiaro: dare più opportunità sia all’auto che a trattori e camion. I vari settori hanno dinamiche diverse. Le macchine per l’agricoltura sono la gallina dalle uovo d’oro per il Lingotto: Cnh sfodera un margine del 6,8% nei primi 9 mesi del 2010. L’auto Fiat invece - che pure ha punte d’eccellenza globale come le fabbriche brasiliane e polacche e la motoristica - procura utili (pochi) quando l’economia tira ma se le cose non vanno annaspa. Gli esperti la definiscono così: una ”piattaforma instabile”. Che forse, nel prossimo biennio, continuerà a bruciare risorse. Lo spin-off di gennaio renderà maggiorenne l’auto del Lingotto che inizierà a camminare sulle sue gambe, aiutata dalle robuste stampelle di una Chrysler in rapido risanamento. Inizia una corsa contro il tempo per salire sul treno della futura ripresa. E sia pure fra mille polemiche, Marchionne ha avviato una ristrutturazione industriale certosina. Non taglia solo i costi, ma sta investendo per ricostruire dalle fondamenta, uno a uno, i principali stabilimenti. E se a fine 2011 chiuderà la fabbrica di Termini Imerese e quella di Imola di Cnh ha già garantito ai plant di Pomigliano e Mirafiori, in Italia, e a quelli in Serbia e Polonia, di poter lavorare su un solo pianale per semplificare la logistica e ottimizzare i costi. Poi da un solo pianale saranno fabbricati vari modelli per le diverse marche del gruppo Fiat/Chrysler. Fra due anni l’Italia esporterà i suv Jeep e gli U.S.A. quelli Maserati. Primi effetti di una Fiat non più chiusa solo nel recinto italiano.

Un miliardo di investimenti per produrre a Mirafiori berline e SUV con i marchi Alfa Romeo e Jeep, previo trasferimento della fabbrica a una joint venture fra Fiat e Chrysler. Questa la proposta che Sergio Marchionne ha fatto ai sindacati nella riunione tenutasi a Torino nella sede dell'Unione industriale; in cambio, l'amministratore delegato della Fiat ha chiesto una «disponibilità a modulare gli orari di lavoro e l'organizzazione interna in modo da permettere il massimo utilizzo dell'impianto»; riferendosi alle polemiche dei mesi scorsi ha invitato a «ripartire da un foglio bianco» e «tenere la politica fuori dalla porta». Vediamone i dettagli: il progetto prevede la formazione di una joint venture tra Fiat e Chrysler per produrre auto di alta gamma con i marchi Alfa Romeo e Jeep; un meccanismo, quello della cosiddetta newco, che ricalca quello di Pomigliano ma con l'importante novità del socio americano. Mirafiori, spostata nella nuova società, produrrà sia berline che SUV sulla stessa piattaforma, quella che internamente viene definita Compact-wide; è in sostanza la piattaforma della recente Alfa Romeo Giulietta, che è stata allargata e adattata alle esigenze del mercato americano: essa costituirà la base di tutte le vetture dei segmenti C e D, anche quelle prodotte da Chrysler negli U.S.A. . I livelli produttivi previsti, ha detto Marchionne, sono compresi tra le 250 e le 280mila unità: sostanzialmente in linea con quanto previsto dal piano quinquennale Fiat presentato lo scorso 21 aprile e molto di più delle 180mila unità del 2009 e delle 120mila previste per quest'anno. È dal 2003 che a Mirafiori non si raggiungono quei volumi di produzione. L'investimento previsto per arrivarci è di oltre un miliardo di euro, comprensivo di quanto destinato ai singoli modelli; la somma verrà ripartita pro-quota tra i due soci in proporzione ai volumi produttivi che ciascuno dei due acquisterà. Secondo «Automotive News Europe» Alfa Romeo potrebbe aver bisogno di circa 150mila tra berline (l'erede della Giulia) SUV, il che comporterebbe una quota di investimento di circa 600 milioni; i restanti 400 circa sarebbero a carico di Jeep che conterebbe di produrre 100mila unità dei modelli Compass/Patriot della nuova generazione (lancio previsto nel 2013). La ripartizione delle quote nella newco dovrebbe vedere la maggioranza in mano a Fiat in proporzioni non troppo diverse da quelle dell'investimento. I nuovi modelli prodotti a Mirafiori – anche quelli Alfa – verranno esportati in tutto il mondo, America compresa. Se verrà raggiunto in tempi brevi un accordo sulla produttività, ha detto Marchionne, lo stabilimento sarà pronto ad avviarne la produzione nella seconda metà del 2012. Cosa succederà di qui ad allora? Attualmente da Mirafiori escono Fiat Multipla, Punto Classic, Idea, Lancia Musa e Alfa Mito. Entro l'anno le prime due andranno fuori produzione; le due monovolume Idea e Musa, arriveranno al 2012, quando verranno sostituite dalle eredi in arrivo dalla Serbia; la Mito resterà anche dopo l'avvio dei nuovi modelli, a meno che i volumi produttivi di questi ultimi non lo impediscano. Secondo Marchionne l'investimento proposto ieri «comporterà la saturazione degli attuali addetti e aprirà la strada ad eventuali possibilità di crescita occupazionale». Nel suo discorso, il numero uno del Lingotto ha lodato i lavoratori di Mirafiori che «hanno sempre dimostrato di avere grandi capacità e di saper fare qualunque tipo di vettura», e ha poi sottolineato che «sarebbe la prima volta che uno stabilimento Fiat in Italia produce automobili per un'azienda straniera»; l'operazione Jeep a Mirafiori si inserisce in un significativo processo di internazionalizzazione della filiera automobilistica piemontese, dal recente acquisto di Italdesign da parte della Volkswagen alla presenza di General Motors con il centro di ricerca mondiale sui motori diesel. Marchionne ha parlato ieri per poco meno di un'ora ai delegati sindacali, lasciando poi al responsabile Fiat delle risorse umane, Paolo Rebaudengo, il compito di illustrare le proposte del Lingotto sulle condizioni di flessibilità e governabilità dell'impianto (si veda l'articolo qui a fianco). Dal top manager sono venuti segnali di apertura: «Non abbiamo nessuna posizione preconcetta e nessuna rigidità sulle modalità necessarie per utilizzare al meglio la capacità produttiva. Ci possono essere soluzioni diverse e si possono discutere. Abbiamo solo bisogno di trovarne una». The Boeing Company has announced it is commencing mass production of its high efficiency solar cell, the C3MJ+. Boeing claims a conversion efficiency of 39.2 percent, the industry’s highest-efficiency cell.

Don't expect to see these solar cells in regular solar panels though - the C3MJ+ is a concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) cell. CPV systems focus sunlight onto a small area of solar photovoltaic materials to generate electricity and are most commonly used in utility scale solar farms.

Spectrolab, a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing, drew on its 50-year history of manufacturing solar cells for space and terrestrial applications to develop the cell. The company set a new world record for efficiency last year with a test solar cell with a peak conversion efficiency of 41.6 percent.

Russ Jones, Spectrolab director of CPV Business Development, says the company is going into production with essentially the same technology and plan to deliver the first of these 39.2 percent efficient C3MJ+ cells in January.

Boeing says Spectrolab has introduced mass production of a new series of solar cells with increased energy-conversion efficiency each year since 2007.

Spectrolab solar products have powered satellites since 1958 and today Spectrolab solar cells power 60 percent of all satellites orbiting the Earth, as well as the International Space Station, NASA's solar powered Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity.

Spectrolab aims to achieve 40 percent average production efficiency for terrestrial solar cells in 2011.

Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid SUV will be launched in 2013, according to Yoshikazu Nakamura, senior executive officer of Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s global electric vehicle business. He said that the SUV will be similar to the Px-MiEV concept car displayed at the 2009 Tokyo auto show. He indicated that the plug-in hybrid is in its final stages of development. The four-wheel-drive Px-MiEV concept features a 1.6-liter four cylinder partnered to a hybrid system with two electric motors -- one for the front wheels and one for the rear. Back then, Mitsubishi has claimed that the Px-MiEV could be driven up to 30 miles in electric mode before switching to gasoline-electric mode.

Mitsubishi said that it will produce its i-MiEV electric vehicle in only three West Coast states and Hawaii when it starts selling in the US in November 2011. Mitsubishi had also revised the name of the vehicle for the US market. It used to be known as the i-MiEV but it is now called the "i powered by MiEV."

The i will be a 2012 model. Nakamura said that on its first year of sales in the US, 43 Mitsubishi dealers in California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii will sell the i. Nakamura said that Mitsubishi hasn't named its plug-in hybrid SUV, but it will have the "MiEV" moniker. MiEV stands for "Mitsubishi innovative electric vehicle."

Sometime in late 2011, Ford is supposed to start delivering electrified versions of its new Focus to dealerships. While Ford hasn’t given us any “official” pictures of the Focus Electric, these appear to be spyshots of the upcoming electric car.

Due to arrive in late-2011 as a 2012 model, the Focus Electric will use a lithium-ion battery pack sourced from LG Chem. To help keep these batteries cool, the pack will be liquid-cooled to boost both lifespan and performance. Ford is expecting a range of approximately 100 miles, which is on par with the Nissan Leaf electric due soon.

AN AUSTRALIAN-DESIGNED electric car, to be built in China, plans to take on the world with a price under $10,000, an iPad-like dash capable of downloading apps and the promise of never needing liquid fuel.

The Noddy-like EDay hatch, set to debut at July's Melbourne motor show, will arrive next year as 100 lease vehicles, before going on sale in 2012 from $9990 (plus on-road costs). This undercuts petrol-powered competitors by thousands of dollars and is about 14 per cent of the price of the only mass-produced electric car on sale today, Mitsubishi's i-MiEV.

The car, able to travel up to 160 kilometres between charges, has a top speed of just 80km/h and weighs 450 kilograms. It will be the slowest and lightest new car on the market - and the cheapest, something sure to cement its appeal in a segment where shaving a few hundred dollars can boost sales.

The top-secret project is being run by EDay Life, a small Australian company run by former Holden director of innovation and advanced engineering Laurie Sparke and car dealer Robert Lane.

They have formed a team of 20 engineers and are finalising plans to sell the cars in countries as diverse as Malaysia, Hong Kong, Britain and France.

''What we're bringing … is Australian innovative technology,'' Mr Sparke said of the ambitious start-up project. ''We are going to develop the new generation of electric car.''

While the prospect of a start-up taking on the established car makers may seem overly ambitious, Mr Sparke said the size, flexibility and clean-sheet approach had advantages.

Just as fledgling brand Tesla had prompted others to take notice - Toyota has since signed an agreement with the Californian electric car specialist - Mr Sparke predicted a rise of next-generation vehicle makers driven from the IT industry, pointing to the Dell computers business model of lean manufacturing.

He said the new approach allowed engineering flexibility, while Australian ingenuity - often leveraged by US giants Ford and General Motors - and EDay's minuscule size gave it an advantage over established players.

The EDay will also get a touchscreen display to control major functions and the ability to download apps that could include everything from basic vehicle data to vehicle-to-home communications. With production set for a Shanghai plant, with initial capacity of 50,000, EDay plans to sell the cars around the world.

"Ritornare in un Paese da dove Fiat è stata cacciata a causa della bassa qualità è un grande rischio", ma rappresenta la possibilità per la casa torinese di "entrare su uno dei mercati più grandi del mondo e acquisire quella dimensione che la trasformeranno da piccola azienda europea a produttore globale". "Il suo mercato domestico è troppo piccolo e le attività troppo poco competitive per fornire una base di sopravvivenza di lungo periodo", scrive il settimanale ripercorrendo le tappe che hanno portato la Fiat a conquistare il 20% di Chrysler con la possibilità di salire al 35% prima e acquisire il controllo in occasione della quotazione.
