Carbon Fibre Fashion

Carbon fibre became a very popular material in many different areas. It started with airplanes, formula 1 cars, normal cars, laptop computers, iPhone cases and many other things. Carbon fibre is a composite material. This means, it is a combination of carbon and fibre. More basically, it is a very strong plastic! Actually it is stronger than steal and also very light, therefore it is very expensive. This unique characteristics make is very popular for automotive and aerospace industry. Mercedes McLaren SLR was a carbon fibre car, all formula 1 cars are carbon fibre, some Porsche 911 models especially GT series have carbon fibre parts to reduce weight and sustain the same level of safety.

Interestingly this ugly looking material and offers the feeling of plastic become a fashion material. Actually I was afraid of this integration in fashion, because carbon fibre is like a plastic. You cannot feel the difference in fashion products and looks weird. For iPhone cases, it might be okay. Light and robust to damages, that’s fine. A fresh fashion designer from Prague decided to use carbon fibre in shoes, in women shoes! I am not kidding. She designed high heels made from carbon fibre, the material looks exactly the same as a car interior or some unpainted parts of Mercedes SLR.

In terms of creativity, this is a great integration but in terms of functionality I really wonder the benefit. With these carbon fibres shoes, you will use less calories to walk around and even if you use them for breaking some other things nothing would happen. Also you can run faster with these shoes, as they are lighter! Actually I have no idea how carbon fibre create a benefit for fashion.

Fully Charged Nemesis electric supercar



Robert goes for a test drive of the Nemesis electric supercar created by Ecotricity's Dale Vince. The car being driven in this video is the same Lotus based EV we have been following over the last year or so.

The car uses Prismatic Lithium ion cells that give a range of 150 miles. Motive power is provided by a pair of BLDC motors, one for each rear wheel, connected to the standard CV drive shafts with a reduction gear arrangement using Gilmer belts (hence the supercharger sound track). The motors are powered by a pair of UQM inverters.

Despite the fact the car uses BLDC motors, similar to those used in the Toyota Prius and Chevy Volt, the car doesn't have regenerative braking.

Be warned, the sound track features a very loud whine inside the cabin of the vehicle made by the Gilmer belt transmission in this car.

GE to place Biggest Electric-Vehicle Order in History

General Electric Co. may jump-start the electric-vehicle industry with an order that Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt said will be the largest in history.

GE, whose power-generation equipment provides a third of the world’s electricity, will order “tens of thousands” of the vehicles in about a week, Immelt said yesterday in a speech in London, without giving a total or identifying a manufacturer.

“This is a huge step up,” said Brett Smith, a vehicle technology analyst at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan. “It’s the biggest order to date I’m aware of, by a lot.”

Expanding the world’s fleet of electric vehicles would bolster GE as it expands so-called clean-energy technology such as car chargers, solar panels and wind turbines. For every dollar of electric-vehicle sales, GE estimates it may get 10 cents in revenue, said Gary Sheffer, a spokesman.

Immelt said half of GE’s sales force of about 45,000 will drive electric vehicles. The Fairfield, Connecticut-based company also has a vehicle-leasing division through its GE Capital finance unit. Financial terms and other details about the order aren’t yet being disclosed, GE said.

GE is investing $10 billion over the next five years in clean energy across its business lines, including power- transmission software and so-called smart-grid technologies. Its products include lithium-ion batteries for cars and trucks via a venture with A123 Systems Inc. and sodium-based batteries for use in large vehicles such as locomotives.

Creating Jobs

That spending creates jobs, Immelt told executives at an event sponsored by the University of Cambridge’s Programme for Sustainability Leadership.

“GE has been one of the biggest players in this game and certainly has a lot to gain from the electric vehicle,” Smith said. “They’ve really truly tried to push this hard to get things going, and it seems to be a core corporate value.”

An order the size of GE’s probably would come from several vehicle makers, Smith said.

Automakers preparing to sell vehicles powered solely by batteries in the next 18 months include Nissan Motor Co., which starts delivering Leaf hatchbacks late this year; Ford Motor Co., readying electric versions of its Transit Connect delivery van and Focus compact car; and Toyota Motor Corp., which will sell a rechargeable RAV4 sport-utility vehicle.

Global Outlook

General Motors Co. begins delivering plug-in Volt hybrids this year, and Honda Motor Co., Chrysler LLC, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and other large brands are preparing battery vehicles due by 2012.

Combined deliveries of hybrids, such as Toyota’s Prius, and battery-powered cars may reach 5.2 million by 2020, according to an Oct. 27 forecast by J.D. Power & Associates. That would be about 7.3 percent of the projected global vehicle market.

Immelt used his remarks in London to renew his call for increased private spending on renewable-energy investments.

“Now is exactly the time, because it’s less popular, where we have to invest more,” Immelt said. “We have to do it more courageously. And we’re going to have to go forward for a while without government at our backs.”

GE Energy Infrastructure is the company’s biggest industrial unit, accounting for $37 billion of the parent company’s $157 billion in revenue last year. GE is also the world’s largest maker of locomotives, jet engines, medical- imaging equipment and related information technology systems.

GE is the largest shareholder for Watertown, Massachusetts- based A123, which has signed agreements with Navistar International Corp. and Fisker Automotive Inc. to supply advanced batteries for their vehicles.

Morgan Stanley: Fiat ha le carte in regola per il rilancio dell'Alfa Romeo


"La Fiat è ben piazzata per il turn around del brand Alfa". E' quanto sostengono gli analisti finanziari della banca Morgan Stanley, nel report "The logic of keeping Alfa" ("La logica di tenersi l'Alfa"). L'ultima volta Sergio Marchionne, amministratore delegato di Fiat, lo ha ribadito il 20 ottobre scorso: l'Alfa non è in vendita. Ieri tuttavia, dicono gli analisti di Morgan Stanely, il manager sembra aver lasciato una porticina aperta. In conference call ha infatti detto che se arrivasse un'offerta congrua "Fiat dovrebbe logicamente guardarla con attenzione". Partono da questo spunto gli analisti di Morgan Stanley, per analizzare le prospettive di Alfa Romeo. E adesso più che in passato, dicono, che ha tutte le carte in regola per rilanciare Alfa. Grazie all'alleanza con Chrysler, Alfa Romeo e di conseguenza Fiat potrà competere con Bmw e Mercedes, soprattutto a partire dalla fine del 2011, quando debutterà la nuova Giulia. Gli analisti di Morgan Stanley prevedono inoltre che la domanda dei clienti cosiddetti "premium" si rivolgerà sempre più verso auto più piccole, un segmento che "al momento solo Audi e Volkswagen possono sperare di soddisfare". Nonostante la concorrenza della Mini e della A1, "Alfa è in una posizione forte per capitalizzare questo trend" si legge nel report della Morgan Stanley. A questo si aggiunge il fatto che Fiat al momento detiene i migliori motori di piccole dimensioni, efficienti e a bassa emissione di CO2, elemento considerato un vantaggio competitivo non da poco, che potrà andare a beneficio anche dei nuovi modelli Alfa. Infine Chrysler porterà in dote a Fiat un network di distribuzione anche oltreoceano, dove recentemente le piccole di lusso hanno registrato un certo successo.

HaloIPT Launches First Wireless Electric Car Charger



The next generation of electric cars could be charged wirelessly and even powered up as they drive over electrified roads, claims a company backed by engineering giant Arup.

The company, HaloIPT, is the first in the world to bring to market IPT (Inductive Power Transfer) technology which allows cars fitted with a receiver pad to charge automatically when parked over transmitter pads buried into the ground.

IPT systems can also be configured to power all road-based vehicles from small city cars to heavy-goods vehicles and buses.

The technology was launched overnight in London. The first car to be powered with HaloIPT technology will be on display in London until the end of November.

Dr Anthony Thomson, CEO of HaloIPT says the wireless charging pads are designed to function beneath asphalt, submerged in water or covered in ice and snow.

In the future, the technology will be able to be embedded in roads so cars can be charged on the move. This will solve the range issues electric vehicles have and reduce battery size requirements, says Dr Thompson.

Their pioneering technology uses magnetic fields to transfer power instead of cables or brushes.

The IPT technology was developed by The University of Auckland's Power Electronics Group. The group is led by electrical engineers Professor John Boys and Associate Professor Grant Covic from the Faculty of Engineering at the University.

Dr Boys says it was an exciting development and pleasing to see research originally developed in the basement of the Engineering Faculty at the University of Auckland more than 20 years ago (1989) now making it on to the international stage.

Last week my friend Laurence mentioned something in Costa Coffee. The stupidness of sizing your coffee! Every time you have identify the size your coffee or tea; small, medium, large and sometime it is quite pointless. I don’t like it either, because a tea is a tea. The size the same in everywhere, and for coffee also! The size of cappuccino is very clear, you don’t have to express you MBA degree ego to coffee. How I know this, I have MBA also. Based on our training, sorry education every product can be expand in order to increase profit with stupid names. Tall, Grande, Venti! I know each of these names express a capacity but nobody knows it, people are trying to learn them because it sound cool! And this is the side effects of iPod generation.

Unfortunately this MBA obsessed branding strategy virus split to Bentley also. Their “new” vehicle Continental family have different types. The cheapest one with no special name, it means you don’t want something very sporty, you don’t have many horse powers, you don’t want accurate steering wheel or you cannot afford to buy the more expensive one. The second choice is called Speed model, it has 610 horse power (normal one has 555 horse power), it is more sporty, very fast, comfortable, communicative steering wheel and more expensive. And last one is the SuperSports, that is a lunatic car with 630 horse power and can achieve 329 kph (204 mph) without any problem. Actually I don’t know why it is not capable of doing 330 kph! This car is very fast, very sporty, seats are a bit uncomfortable, very fast, has a very sexy bonnet, very fast. And also very expensive!

So I really wonder, why someone wants to buy a slow Bentley? It is against its DNAs of Bentley. Hey, I have a slow Bentley! This does not sound well :( As I mentioned everything has changed now, coffee is being sold with weird sizes, everything has a category, group or something else. Actually this is the iPod era! And I don’t like it. I just want to see a lunatic Bentley with exquisite comfort at the same time.

Marchionne: per avvicinare i salari italiani a quelli tedeschi servono maggiore produttività e saturazione degli impianti


Ecco la domanda che gli operai della Fiat si pongono in questo momento: «Come farà Sergio Marchionne ad aumentarci il salario, portandolo ai livelli dei colleghi tedeschi? ». L’amministratore delegato della Fiat ha chiaramante detto che, una volta in grado di competere con i Paesi vicini, le buste paga delle tute blu torinesi saranno più pesanti: da 1.300 a 2.000 euro netti, più meno la paga che percepisce un operaio tedesco. La sfida, dunque, è partita almeno nelle intenzioni, visto che il 4 novembre ci sarà l’incontro tra il top manager e il nuovo Ministro allo Sviluppo Economico, Paolo Romani, a cui seguirà la corsa finale agli accordi per far decollare Fabbrica Italia. Sono due le parole sulle quali Marchionne insisterà nei prossimi giorni: produttività e saturazione, entrambe legate a doppio filo con la prospettata maggiore soddisfazione economica dei lavoratori. «L’incremento della produttività, ovvero la riduzione delle ore impiegate per realizzare un’auto - spiega Andrea Alghisi, director di Alix Partners - è una leva fondamentale per un’azienda, insieme però ad altre, quali a esempio la saturazione della capacità produttiva. Se aumenta il numero di vetture prodotte si ammortizzano i costi e gli investimenti. E a beneficiarne è la redditività del gruppo industriale. Ma per avere la necessaria produttività e la saturazione ottimale, quello che in pratica chiede Marchionne, occorre l’accordo con la forza lavoro sulla flessibilità e la condivisione dei target produttivi». Il capo della Fiat ha fretta e mette fretta alle parti sociali (una decisione dovrà essere presa prima di Natale). All’orizzonte, infatti, si profila una scadenza: il 2013, anno nel quale le case automobilistiche più virtuose dovrebbero ritrovare l’equilibrio tra produttività e saturazione. Nel suo annuale «Automotive study», Alix Partners sottolinea gli effetti della economica del 2009: rispetto al 2007, anno nel quale la saturazione della capacità produttiva era a livello mondiale intorno all’83%, l’utilizzazione delle fabbriche è scesa al 65% con pesanti ripercussioni per la redditività delle aziende. «Ci vorranno almeno due o tre anni - precisa Alghisi - per tornare a livelli accettabili». Da qui l’importanza di chiudere quanto prima il discorso sulla flessibilità anche perché, come osserva Paolo Pirani, segretario confederale della Uil, «i lavoratori devono rendersi conto che l’accordo firmato per Pomigliano d’Arco è sicuramente premiante: non dimentichiamo, al riguardo, che negli Stati Uniti il sindacato UAW, quello della Chrysler, ha accettato la riduzione del salario orario (2.400 euro al mese per 40 ore settimanali) oltre al blocco degli scioperi fino al 2015». «Da noi, invece - continua Pirani - è previsto l’aumento degli stipendi fino a 4.000 euro lordi l’anno, un accordo che a Detroit ci invidiano. Ritengo quindi fuori luogo tutto questo dibattito in Italia». Marchionne, nel commentare la scorsa settimana la terza trimestrale del Lingotto, ha detto una cosa nuova, cioè che il gruppo deve guardarsi soprattutto da chi gli sta vicino: i concorrenti europei. Pur tenendo ben presente che sarà la Cina il ring dentro il quale si misureranno sempre più i costruttori (Daimler ha appena annunciato nuovi investimenti per 3 miliardi), il nemico è dietro l’angolo e si chiama Francia (il gruppo PSA, Peugeot-Citroën, archiviato il terzo trimestre con dati sopra le attese, ha rivisto al rialzo gli obiettivi dell’anno) e Germania (Volkswagen ha più che decuplicato nel trimestre gli utili, con vendite record tra gennaio e settembre, e punta a diventare il primo produttore mondiale nel 2018). Berlino, in particolare, rappresenta il modello a cui guardare, la base per costruire un rapporto nuovo e collaborativo con la forza lavoro grazie al quale il maggior produttore locale, il gruppo Volkswagen, in pochi anni ha trovato la formula per presentarsi all’appuntamento con il 2011 in forma smagliante. Merito della riorganizzazione del lavoro e di un sindacato concreto e lungimirante. Essere competitivi rispetto agli agguerriti vicini di casa per combatterli ad armi pari, significa, per Marchionne, poter contare su un sistema Paese pronto ad accogliere con benevolenza la volontà di un grande gruppo di sviluppare i propri impianti staccando un assegno di 20 miliardi. Prendiamo la Serbia, che ha subito approfittato della querelle in Italia, per «scippare» a Mirafiori uno dei nuovi modelli. Qui le discussioni hanno lasciato il posto ai fatti, tanto che negli ultimi dieci anni il maggior volume di investimenti è arrivato proprio dall’Italia: 2 miliardi di euro, di cui 940 milioni da Torino. Denaro che, forse, poteva essere dirottato nel potenziamanto di un impianto del nostro Paese. Occasione persa, l’auspicio è che non ne seguano altre.

Nissan Rolls Out New High-End Gas-Electric Hybrid Sedan



Nissan launched its first gasoline-electric car developed in-house, the Fuga hybrid, which gets listed mileage of 19.0 km/litre in Japan, comparable to a compact car.

The vehicle, its top-of-the-line sedan, will start at 5,775,000 yen ($71,470). The Fuga is sold as the Infiniti M in many markets, and the hybrid M is due to be rolled out in the United States and Europe in coming months.

Nissan lags rivals Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co by more than a decade in offering a proprietary hybrid model. Instead, it is aiming to be the leader in the zero-emission arena with top shareholder Renault SA by introducing the first mass-scale electric car this year.

Nissan said its one-motor, two-clutch hybrid system would achieve far better fuel economy, at a much lower technical cost compared with hybrid leader Toyota's complex, two-motor "series parallel" system.

The Fuga hybrid gets the best fuel economy among high-end gasoline-electric sedans, topping the Toyota Crown hybrid's 15.8 km/litre, Nissan said. It aims to sell 200 units a month in Japan.

Nissan's hybrid system has a structure similar to that of Volkswagen AG , mounting an extra clutch that separates the electric motor from the engine to allow for driving using only electric power when the battery is charged.

Unlike Volkswagen, however, Nissan's hybrid system needs no torque converter thanks to advanced electronic controls twinned with a lithium-ion battery, developed by its battery unit Automotive Energy Supply (AESC), held with NEC Corp.

Nissan has been selling a small number of Altima hybrids in the United States using Toyota's hybrid system to clear regulations in California.

Toyota announce hybrid NiMH battery recycling joint venture

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), Toyota Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (Toyota Chemical Engineering), Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (Sumitomo Metal Mining) and Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd. (PEVE) announce the launch of the world’s first* business to recycle nickel in used hybrid-vehicle nickel-metal-hydride batteries for use in new nickel-metal-hydride batteries.

Previously, nickel-metal-hydride batteries recovered by car dealers and vehicle dismantling businesses were subjected to reduction treatment, and scrap containing nickel was recycled as a raw material for stainless-steel manufacturing. Now, with the development of high-precision nickel sorting and extraction technology, materials can be introduced directly into the nickel-refining process, thus achieving “battery-to-battery” recycling.

To carry out the business, TMC has established the Toyota HV Call Center to help recover the batteries, constructed advanced recycling facilities designed for mass production in cooperation with Toyota Chemical Engineering, and is receiving support from Sumitomo Metal Mining concerning the refining of nickel for use in batteries. TMC is also receiving support from PEVE concerning quality assurance in the manufacture of hybrid-vehicle nickel-metal-hydride batteries.

In addition, making use of trucks on return trips from parts deliveries is planned to reduce environmental impact, including CO2 emissions during transport.

The establishment of this recycling system in Japan will accelerate the creation of a sustainable, recycling-based society, a priority measure for TMC, and is a showcase for recovery and recycling technologies as effective means of promoting and reinforcing recycling in response to global resource limitations.

TMC is currently investigating introducing this recycling system overseas.

Starts on paper, ends up on paper

Usually I don’t watch the videos on iPhone applications. They might be boring, too long or I just don’t bother to watch. This time I wondered the Fendi’s video section on iPhone application and watched it. It was an interview with Karl Lagerfeld. As you can imagine, it is all about fashion but I like the last sentence of the interview. Fashion starts with paper and ended up in magazine or newspaper, paper is the starting point and where it ends up. This sentence basically defines the fashion business.

From this point of view, cars stars with paper and ended up in paper also. The design stage, sketches mostly starts on paper, then to computer and later on with clay models. The production is done with metals and finally the pictures are printed on magazine or newspaper. I know the end up product of design is a car and made by steel, however every car built on earth printed on paper. Either it is nice or ugly, you can find a picture of each car printed on somewhere. As Lagerfeld mentioned, starts with papers, ends up with paper! I think cars and fashion have more common aspects than we know!

In un’intervista rilasciata all’agenzia Bloomberg, Sergio Marchionne ha ribadito che il Gruppo Fiat non venderà Alfa Romeo al Gruppo Volkswagen, confermando l’obiettivo di 500.000 unità l’anno a partire dal 2014. Il capo del Lingotto ha sottolineato che la giusta dimensione della Casa del Biscione sarebbe la vendita di 300.000 unità annue, ma grazie all’ingresso nel mercato U.S.A. - previsto per il 2012 - l’obiettivo può essere rivisto all’insù. Appunto, la partita tra Alfa Romeo e il suo futuro si giocherà soprattutto oltreoceano, dove la Casa del Biscione andrà a competere direttamente con BMW. Diversamente da quanto detto in precedenza, l’Alfa MiTo non dovrebbe essere commercializzata negli Stati Uniti, mentre la gamma dovrebbe essere composta da 5 modelli: la Giulietta, la sostituta della 159 (che si chiamerà Giulia), l’erede della 166 con piattaforma Chrysler a trazione posteriore e le inedite SUV che andranno a competere direttamente con BMW X1 e X3. Audi A2 electric car sets long-distance record of 600km



An electric car drove from Munich in southern Germany to Berlin without recharging its battery on Tuesday, setting what organisers hailed as a new world distance record for an everyday vehicle.

The yellow and purple Audi A2 car took around seven hours to complete the 600-kilometre (372-mile) stretch and arrived in the sumptuous courtyard of the economy ministry in Berlin just before 8:00am local time (0600 GMT).

"If any journalists want to charge up their iPhones, we still have some electricity left," quipped driver Mirko Hannemann, 27, as he stepped out of the four-door car to show off the battery.

Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle welcomed the team on arrival and was even tempted into taking a spin around the courtyard, although not behind the wheel.

"They even had the heating on. It really was a luxury journey," Bruederle told a large crowd of journalists and photographers on a chilly Berlin morning.

At a later press conference, Bruederle said: "Welcome to a world record. Before, electric cars could typically only go 60 or 70 kilometres before recharging. This is a technological leap forward."

Car manufacturers hope that electric cars will grow to dominate the automotive industry but consumers see the short range of the vehicles as a major downside.

Japanese researchers have driven an experimental electric car more than 1,000 kilometres around a track, but the two German firms, lekker Energie and DBM Energy, said their vehicle was the furthest travelled by an everyday car.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government aims to have one million electric cars on the road by 2020, but Germany's car giants have been slow off the starting grid and are now scrambling to catch up with their Asian rivals.

World-leading luxury car maker BMW and Europe's biggest manufacturer Volkswagen have both said they intend to launch their first vehicles in 2013.

In contrast, last week, Japan's Nissan said it had started mass producing its Leaf electric car and is poised to put it on sale both at home and in the United States.

Nevertheless, Berlin has offered sweeteners to jump-start its national champions and hopes that by 2050, gas-guzzlers could be a thing of the past.

A pre-histroic car in New York

Flash news from Volkswagen for US market! Actually the news release is for Europe but the content should be explained to Americans. Volkswagen’s boring family sedan Jetta is quite common in US like in Europe. If you have two children, a wife and most probably you are young and you could not afford to buy a larger car. Anyway, family cars suppose to offer more comfort than coupes! This means suspension should be “a bit” more comfortable without compromising the handling.

Unfortunately, two generations ago Jetta (Bora) and Golf models were offering a catastrophic rear suspension system called torsion bar. Actually some Toyota models and French cars still have this. What’s wrong with that? Very simply; torsion bar is not a suspension, it is just a cheaper replacement for a proper suspension. Many of you will think, so what! When you have a car with a torsion bar, your handling will be worse and people in the back seat will feel the every single pothole inside their spine! It is offering neither better handling nor comfort but it is cheaper!

VW was using this with Bora (Old Jetta) and Golf, later on understood what they done wrong and replace the rear suspension with multi-link independent rear suspension. Multi-link independent rear suspension is a proper suspension, you don’t need to worry about anything but it is expensive for car companies. For that reason, Ford Focus always had worse interior and great handling. Ford Focus has the best rear suspension on its segment.

The current Jetta sold in US market is offered with torsion bar. This means, Americans have a pre-historic suspension system in a European car, hopefully in Europe VW did not risk its reputation and offers the Jetta with proper multi-link independent suspension. Anyway, Jetta is available with micro size engine 1,2lt TSi with 105 horses inside :)

Al recente Salone dell'auto di Parigi non ha portato neppure un prototipo. Eppure Sergio Marchionne l'attenzione l'ha attirata, eccome. Facendo, come spesso gli capita, il bastian contrario - e proprio in una manifestazione che ha svelato oltre 40 novità mondiali assolute, dalla Volkswagen Passat alla Range Rover Evoque, passando per futuristici prototipi come la Renault DeZir - il capo della Fiat ha detto che non ha senso lanciare i modelli nuovi in un mercato strutturalmente così debole. "Stiamo risparmiando le munizioni per la ripresa", ha dichiarato. Per commentare l'uscita dell'amministratore delegato, Giorgio Airaudo, segretario della Fiom-Cgil torinese e sindacalista specialista in Fiat, usa una metafora calcistica: "Decidendo di rinviare l'esordio delle nuove macchine a quando la crisi sarà finita, interpreta perfettamente il catenaccio all'italiana: una strenua difesa in attesa del contropiede. Speriamo che gli vada bene anche stavolta, perché l'azzardo lo prende lui, ma se va male pagano i lavoratori italiani". Stuart Pearson, analista di Morgan Stanley, da Londra ha una visione più pokeristica: "Sta giocando una partita pericolosa: ritardando i modelli chiave, se sbaglia i tempi rischia di perdersi gli effetti positivi della ripresa". La decisione di far slittare il debutto di tre pezzi da novanta - nel pianeta Fiat - come la Fiat Panda, la Lancia Ypsilon e le monovolume che devono rimpiazzare Lancia Musa, Fiat Idea e Multipla, significa, ovviamente, pure un prolungamento della cassa integrazione. Conseguenza che preoccupa lavoratori e sindacati, ma di fronte alla quale la Borsa fa spallucce. Anzi. Nel breve periodo, il "congelamento" degli investimenti e ogni genere di tagli possono essere valutati favorevolmente, per gli effetti sull'azione. E in attesa del divorzio tra l'auto e il resto del business, con la nascita di Fiat Industrial (che conterrà camion e trattori), nelle raccomandazioni sul titolo del Lingotto fioccano i "buy", comprare. "Anche perché alla sola Fiat Industrial viene attribuito un valore di circa 10 euro. Basta aggiungere 2 euro per la Ferrari e siamo già a 12. Ecco perché non sono fuori dal mondo i target-price indicati in questi giorni da molte banche d'affari", dice Gabriele Gambarova, analista di Banca Akros Esn. Il target price è il prezzo che l'azione potrebbe raggiunge nell'arco dei prossimi 12 mesi. Gambarova è convinto che l'azione Fiat valga almeno 15,5 euro e c'è chi è ancor più positivo: Mediobanca dice 16 euro e Morgan Stanley, a fine settembre, ha indicato un prezzo obiettivo di 18,50 euro. Martedì 12 ottobre il titolo era a 11,7 euro. Per Giacomo Mori, director di AlixPartners, società internazionale di consulenza aziendale, la frenata sugli investimenti europei del gruppo potrebbe essere dettata da due fattori: "Il primo è la forza di cui il gruppo comunque dispone nei segmenti delle vetture piccole, che sono quelle che avranno più vantaggio con la ripresa del mercato. Il secondo risponde a una logica di priorità: con risorse finanziarie non illimitate, Marchionne potrebbe privilegiare il rilancio dei marchi Chrysler e Alfa Romeo o ampliare il business in Sud America". Assai più critiche le considerazioni di un altro esperto del settore, che preferisce restare anonimo: "Il concetto del "risparmio di cartucce", tradotto in soldoni, vuol dire che non ci sono quattrini sufficienti per investire su tutti i modelli che servono per avere una gamma all'altezza della concorrenza. Ricorda più la favola della volpe e l'uva, piuttosto che una scelta strategica. Una nuova vettura, secondo quanto si utilizza di componenti già esistenti, costa dai 200 ai 500 milioni di euro. Se non li spendi risparmi, ma intanto gli altri, che non la pensano come te, ti soffiano clienti che non sarà facile riconquistare quando tu avrai deciso di lanciare auto che, magari, sono già "invecchiate" perché pensate anni addietro". Eccellente ristrutturatore applaudito dalla comunità finanziaria, in sei anni di leadership Marchionne non ha però lasciato il segno come "costruttore" di modelli di successo, con l'eccezione della Fiat 500 che tuttavia, da sola, non può cambiare i destini di un'azienda. E sul fronte dell'auto verde Marchionne è stato spesso caustico, giudicando economicamente insensati i colossali investimenti sull'auto elettrica e sulle ibride, che impiegheranno anni a conquistare fettine di mercato. Magari ha ragione lui: a cavalcare la riduzione dei consumi basta e avanza il fantastico due cilindri TwinAir, appena montato sulla 500 e tra qualche anno saranno gli altri a leccarsi le ferite. Scrive però l'ex manager del gruppo Fiat Riccardo Ruggeri, che è stato membro del comitato direttivo di Fiat Holding, nel libro "Parola di Marchionne", pubblicato qualche mese fa: "Leggendo comunicati e memorie ufficiali presentate nei congressi degli ultimi due anni, si ha come la sensazione di scelte condizionate da esigenze contingenti, guidate da considerazioni di breve termine. La percezione contraria si ha invece guardando a molti competitor e alla loro strategia sui propulsori del futuro". Intanto i concessionari delle marche del gruppo si preparano a un anno e mezzo di passione. La coperta - cioè la gamma - è corta e senza incentivi le vendite hanno innestato la retromarcia e i bilanci si tingono di rosso, con conseguenze funeste per l'occupazione. I dealer di Fiat e Lancia aspettavano come un toccasana le nuove Panda e Ypsilon e invece dovranno aspettare. La Ypsilon non sbarcherà negli show room prima del giugno 2011, con 26 mesi di ritardo sui piani originali: sarà l'unico botto del gruppo nel corso dell'anno prossimo, così come la Giulietta dell'Alfa è stato l'unico lancio significativo del 2010. Poi, nel 2012, dovrebbe toccare alla Panda, che insieme alla Punto è il cuore dell'offerta Fiat. Altri gruppi hanno deciso di affrontare il mercato europeo in affanno con un atteggiamento assolutamente diverso. La Ford, azienda generalista come la Fiat e che può contare su un solo marchio, tra giugno e settembre 2010 ha fatto scendere in campo i restyling delle grandi monovolume, la S-Max e la Galaxy; il mese scorso è toccato al facelift della berlina Mondeo; tra qualche settimana arrivano le nuove monovolume C-Max. Poi nel 2011, che Marchionne prevede terribile, tra marzo e giugno altre tre novità: la Focus 5 porte, la Focus familiare e il pick-up Ranger. E che dire di Volkswagen? Negli ultimi mesi, con la marca Skoda ha proposto il maquillage di Fabia e Roomster e la nuova Superb Giardinetta, mentre il brand VW ha rinfrescato Touran e Sharan e l'anno prossimo lancia le nuove Passat e Jetta. Per non parlare di Audi, che tra agosto e novembre 2010 fa debuttare la piccola A1, il restyling della sportiva TT e la supercoupé A7. Persino Toyota, che in Europa non è certo un fulmine di guerra, si è giocata la nuova Auris nel corso del 2010 e all'inizio del 2011 farà esordire la berlina Lexus Ct 200h e la monovolumina Verso S. Finora, i piani via via presentati dal leader del Lingotto riservano sempre il meglio agli anni a venire. Poi viene presentato un altro piano e il boom previsto slitta un po' in avanti. Emblematico il caso Alfa. Quando Marchionne è arrivato a Torino il marchio del Biscione macinava 150 mila auto l'anno e, secondo uno dei primi business plan del manager italo-canadese, avrebbe dovuto arrampicarsi rapidamente a quota 300 mila, così come la cugina Lancia. All'investor day di aprile 2010, quello che ha annunciato il varo di Fabbrica Italia con oltre 20 miliardi di euro di investimenti in patria e la produzione della futura Panda a Pomigliano, per l'Alfa l'asticella viene addirittura issata a 350 mila unità nel 2014. Con l'intero gruppo proiettato a 2,15 milioni di macchine vendute in Europa, il 64 per cento in più rispetto al 2009. I rinvii delle ultime settimane certo non rendono più abbordabili obiettivi che a molti sono apparsi da subito ambiziosi. Anche perché la sola ripartenza del mercato continentale non sarebbe sufficiente: Fiat, Lancia e Alfa dovrebbero rosicchiare clienti alla concorrenza. Nel 2010 sta accadendo il contrario: la fine degli incentivi ha tarpato le ali alla ripresa del gruppo oltre confine e anche nella roccaforte italiana la quota di mercato è in declino. "La decisione di posticipare l'arrivo dei nuovi modelli ci vede preoccupatissimi", sostiene Filippo Pavan Bernacchi, presidente di Federauto, l'associazione nazionale dei dealer e dell'organizzazione dei concessionari Fiat, che spiega: "Avremmo bisogno di questi prodotti subito, per difendere i fatturati delle nostre aziende". Aggiunge Tommaso Tommasi, direttore di InterAuto News: "In una fase in cui molte case automobilistiche indicano nelle novità la miglior difesa per arginare i danni di un mercato in forte calo, i concessionari Fiat, Alfa Romeo e Lancia si lamentano per la mancanza di prodotti "freschi", che li sta mettendo in grossa difficoltà rispetto alla concorrenza". SAP and Siemens establish eCar EV partnership


As electric vehicles continue to capture the attention of consumers and governments around the globe, the future adoption of these vehicles is seen by some as a key enabler of lower worldwide carbon emissions. While the global spotlight on sustainability increases, wider collaboration among stakeholders is necessary to bring the prospect of electric vehicles to fruition. SAP AG and Siemens IT Solutions and Services, Inc. finalized a mutual working agreement during GridWeek 2010 in Washington, D.C., that will set the stage for establishing an eCar proof of concept (POC).

The POC is intended to demonstrate the cross-industry collaboration necessary to support widespread viability of electric vehicles through development of new and use of existing enabling technologies such as advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), which can interconnect meter data across multiple charging stations and support anticipated transaction scenarios across various utilities providers. The collaboration efforts drove the respective parties to form a work group that will assemble a sub-committee to the SAP AMI Lighthouse Council, of which Siemens IT Solutions and Services, Inc is a member. The sub-committee, the Sustainable Utility Committee (SUC), will lead the charge on enabling e-mobility.

Siemens Energy will supply a physical charging station as well as access to an e-mobility network operating center, which will enable communication between the charging station and various back-end systems. In addition to the Siemens hardware, the back-end system will initially include software from SAP and others as required by the use cases for Siemens IT Solutions and Services Inc, to properly integrate and perform end-to-end workflow processes for the utilities. The initial design will leverage the Siemens technology at the device and network level and integrate respectively into SAP® for Utilities solutions.

"Siemens prides itself on delivering the future of energy today. Siemens and SAP have successfully done this work in Europe and now it is time to introduce it to North America," said Holger Kormann, vice president, Energy - North America, Siemens IT Solutions and Services, Inc. "What test-bed environment could be better than that which has set the tone for standards and excellence with the SAP Lighthouse Council. The council has acted as the 'voice of the utilities community,' providing the connection between utilities of all types and industry leaders as they develop their technology and solutions for the future."

The work group is looking toward a sustainable future by working on clearly defined use cases. As part of phase one of the POC, the group intends to demonstrate the end-to-end process integration of measuring energy consumption and generating an invoice of an eCar charging at the "home" utility. It will also cater to the roaming use case where a "guest" utility is involved - for example, how a student living in one state could settle electricity costs incurred during cross-country commutes via their local residential bill. Additional charging and billing scenarios such as measurement and billing process for a "pro-sumer," where the customer is also a producer of electricity, are planned to be developed once the initial POC is complete and select utilities will be targeted for unique use cases.

"In areas such as smart grids, AMI and carbon measurement, SAP is helping companies across multiple industries by delivering business solutions that integrate and enable all areas of a smarter and more sustainable energy ecosystem," said Henry Bailey, vice president, Industry Business Solutions, Service Industries, North America, SAP. "This partnership further underscores the decisive steps we are taking to realize our vision of making the world run better, enabling new business models and economies of scale by helping validate and optimize power generation and distribution for the electric cars of tomorrow."

A demonstration and results of this effort are planned be provided to the utility community early next year and initial participants are expected to be announced over the coming weeks. Technologists and utilities are invited to participate in the Sustainable Utility Committee and assist in making e-mobility a reality.

GQ Sections

I have been reading GQ UK Magazine for long time. I like the way they combine different topics together in one fashion magazine. You can find whatever you want in each issue. It is like a Swiss army knife magazines, if you want to learn life style start reading GQ. Especially the UK edition, because it is better!


However I have some concerns about GQ, as I mentioned they talk about everything but not everything all the time! Their car section is written by Celia Walden and Jason Barlow. Celia drove everything from tank to private jets and we know Jason from CAR and TopGear magazines. Despite the respectful contributors to car column, but I’ve never seen cars in their Style section. There are lots of things expects car. Actually cars are placed under “Entertainment”! GQ’s placement for cars is very interesting.


I know cars are entertaining but the stylish people do not drive cheap and dull looking cars. They spent fortune on stylish cars. Like, Range Rover Autobiography, Mercedes’s bespoke Designo, BMW Individual and many more. I am not expecting to see a diesel Volkswagen Passat Estate in Style section but they can place some of the cars under it.
