VW to launch 100mpg Hybrid Golf by 2020
Tuesday, February 8, 2011Volkswagen is set to launch a 100mpg Golf in 2020, in time to meet super-stringent EU fuel economy regulations. The greenest Golf — likely to be the blue-e-motion — is expected to have an average CO2 rating of just 75g/km.
Planned EU regulations require the average fuel economy across a maker’s entire range to average just 95g/km by 2020, which is forcing car makers into considering radical methods to drive down consumption.
Launched as part of the Mk8 Golf line-up, the super-frugal car will feature much of the technology featured in the new XL1. But it’s expected to get a next-generation version of the two-cylinder hybrid powertrain.
A combination of improved combustion technology and new materials should allow the engine to have a higher power density and still use slightly less fuel.
However, VW sources say the super-frugal Golf will also have to see significant friction reduction and aerodynamic improvement as well as a big weight loss. Carbon-reinforced plastics could be used for the bonnet and roof panels, for example, and heavy sound deadening is likely to be replaced by a sound cancellation system working through the car’s audio.
VW to launch 95mpg Up blue-e-motion Hybrid
Monday, February 7, 2011Volkswagen is putting the final touches to a super-economical version of the Up city car, which will be good for at least 95mpg.
Expected to be called the Up blue-e-motion, the model will be powered by a production version of the powertrain from the XL1 concept, company sources say.
Based on today’s four-cylinder, 1.6-litre VW Group diesel engine, the Up’s twin-cylinder, 800cc turbodiesel is expected to develop just 47bhp, but will be ‘assisted’ by a 26bhp electric motor. The engine’s block is made from aluminium and the bores are plasma coated. It also gets a sophisticated balancer shaft set-up to smooth out the inherently unbalanced two-cylinder layout. The engine and electric motor will be coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Unlike the XL1, however, the Up blue-e-motion will not be able to travel solely on battery power. That’s because the car’s battery pack will only be large enough to power the electric motor during standing starts or for brief periods of hard acceleration. Energy will be reclaimed during braking to help recharge the battery.
The Up is also likely to be equipped with the XL1’s new ‘pulse starting’ feature, which will make the car’s stop-start mode much more seamless. In pulse starting, the electric motor spins the idle engine up to the required speed for its restart, making it virtually undetectable by the driver.
When the XL1 is being powered purely by this hybrid diesel engine, it returns 141mpg on the EU test cycle. However, the Up will be at least 300kg heavier than the carbonfibre-bodied XL1 and will have more aerodynamic drag, due to its bigger cabin and much greater frontal area, which means fuel economy will be reduced by about a third when compared with the concept.
VW Touareg vs. Range Rover video with some mistakes !!!
Sunday, February 6, 2011
Honestly I really like Volkswagen vehicles, they are really well built, and they offer good features with reasonable price. Actually sometimes overpriced but still deserves that money. But they look boring, most of them looking boring. Except GTi models, I would not buy any VW with emotional reasons.
Recently VW USA released a video for new Touareg on YouTube. And it is comparing the Touareg with an unknown brand which sounds like it is from UK! Let’s guess the brand; Bentley (They don’t offer SUV), Lotus (No SUV), Rolls Royce (No SUV), Land Rover (Lots of SUV). Actually the video is comparing Touareg with Range Rover. (Range Rover is a brand of Land Rover.)
The scenario is really creative, I appreciated the PR team but they did lots of mistakes! I guess they did not read the Range Rover’s option list and features. Let’s start with first feature of Range Rover; Terrain Response! And it is not available on Touareg! I never seen a knob to select the terrain surface to alter the vehicle’s driving dynamics; such as braking and throttle response. In other words, with Range Rover you can off road even if you have no idea of what is the meaning off road. And secondly, the Touareg without off road, it is totally useless! Don’t every try off road because it cannot do it. The Range Rover offers, Low Range gear box and central differential lock. This means, you can handle with serious off road. With Touareg, you can park on sidewalks in terms of off road! (You need to pay for extra to have off road package with Touareg and it comes with six (6) speed auto transmission not eight (8) !)Then the seats, Range Rover offers leather and heated seats as standard! This is not Suzuki Vitara! Also air suspension is standard, this helps to raise and lower the vehicles and travel with comfort. I guess it is optional in Touareg. Also Range Rover offers 8 speed automatic transmission. Sorry VW, you are not the only product with 8 speed auto because it is produced a by firm called ZF not by VW!
The CD player in Touareg, very nice :) If we were in 1995, it would sound a very good feature but now even the Chinese cars offer CD player. And what are you going to be with dual SD card reader? I really wonder :) Also Range Rover offers ventilated seats, electrically adjustable rear seats, Autobiography bespoke programme to create your unique Range Rover with endless colour scheme. And lastly, you buy a Range Rover! Addition to these features, a car which never looks old or looks out-dated. Just look around, have you ever seen an out-dated Range Rover, I think the previous Touareg was outside from the first moment :)
I don’t have any negative feelings with Touareg but I would never buy it. On the other hand, it really offers state of the art technologies but the PR firm should have studied the Range Rover better!!! It is really tough competitors. In other words, if you are planning to construct a building more impressive than Pyramids, you have to study really well !

Volkswagen debuts 313mpg XL1 concept hybrid [Video]
Wednesday, January 26, 2011Volkswagen today presented the XL1 prototype, the eagerly-awaited vehicle that consumes only 0.9 l/100km (261.3 US mpg - 313 IMP mpg)! Scheduled to make its world debut at the Qatar Motor Show (26-29 January), the new concept releases only 24 grams of CO2 per kilometer, obviously thanks to a series of technological innovations, all of them supposed to cut emissions and improve mileage.
The XL1 uses a combination of lightweight construction, monocoque and add-on parts made of carbon fiber, a very low aerodynamic drag (0.186) plus a very advanced plug-in hybrid system which relies on a two-cylinder TDI engine and an electric motor.
Specifically, the car measures 3,888 mm / 1,665 mm / 1,156 mm (153 in / 65.5 in / 45.5 in) and has a wheelbase of 2,224 mm (87.5 in). The 800 cm3 two-cylinder TDI engine generates a maximum power of 48 hp and 120 Nm of torque, while the electric motor adds an extra 27 hp and 100 Nm of torque. The powertrains are mated to a 7-speed DSG, with the electric unit being backed by a lithium-ion battery pack.
Weighing only 795 kilos, the car can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 11.9 seconds, while achieving a maximum electronically-limited speed of 160 km/h (99.4 mph). The estimated range of the electric motor is 35 kilometers, while the whole autonomy, TDI plus electric, goes up to 550 km with only 10 liters of fuel.
This is real!

Many of you might have heard of automatic parking systems and they sound a bit useless. You need to press this and do that and wait. Lexus has a very useless system as a matter of fact but Volkswagen has something really intelligent. I never thought that a car can park like and it would be entertaining. And this happened with VW Passat. Last week I had a test drive with new Passat and I wanted to try the auto parking function. For the first time it is a bit complicated; you have to signal to right and drive slow and then party starts! Passat recognizes the empty spot and tell you, let’s do it.
Honestly, it is working brilliantly. You don’t need to worry for anything, everything is under the control of German made Passat. You only need to press throttle and press brake that’s all, and change the gear. I think it would be easier as you use it more often. Even though, it was amazing for the first. Again, this systems works excellently, go and buy it :) Unfortunately, there is a no auto cooking for beefs.Pictures' Copyrights

Sanyo to boost output of auto Lithium batteries 150%
Saturday, January 8, 2011Sanyo plans to raise its annual output capacity for automotive lithium-ion batteries by 150 percent, by investing about 15 billion yen (about $180 million) in a key plant, the Nikkei reported.
Sanyo's production lines at the Kasai plant in Hyogyo Prefecture, which will double to four in 2011, will produce batteries with capacities of 20 ampere-hours or higher for use in plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, the daily said.
The company produces lithium-ion batteries for hybrid vehicles made by the Volkswagen AG group, the business daily said.
By boosting capacity, Sanyo aims to use the plant -- among the top in the world in production capacity for automotive lithium-ion batteries -- as its main supply base for three automakers, Nikkei said.
Panasonic, which will turn Sanyo into a wholly owned unit next spring, is positioning automotive lithium-ion batteries as a pillar of its group operations, the daily said.
At a combined share of 26 percent, Sanyo and Panasonic led the global market for cellular phone lithium-ion batteries in the July-September quarter, according to Tokyo firm Techno Systems Research Co, the Nikkei said.
By expanding operations, the team is looking to be the global leader in the field of automotive lithium-ion batteries.
Green Overdrive: VW’s Electric Golf! [Video]
Friday, January 7, 2011This week Katie Fehrenbacher goes for a spin in VW's all-electric car the Blue-e-motion Golf.
Volkswagen won't launch their EV until late 2013, or 2014. VW say they intend to wait for the next generation A7 Golf platform so they can make the necessary changes to the vehicle's floor plan to accommodate the 'T' shaped battery pack they intend to use.
The Blue-e-motion also has four driving modes that drivers can use to change how aggressive, or not, the regenerative braking of the car is.
I was the Guest in a Fashion Blog
Thursday, January 6, 2011Yesterday was a milestone for me. Don’t think that I invented a new type of engine or a new technology to use the lovely vegetable salary as a fuel. Actually what I have done is not that exciting but for me it was the first time.
Couple of months ago my blogger friend Sıla asked me to contribute to her fashion blog called Fashion By Siu. Actually I had some articles about fashion and cars but I was looking for something more exciting for a fashion blog. Hopefully VW and Lagerfeld helped me to solve this problem. VW’s new advertisement turns into our mutual blog topic :) So, there is no problem of finding a topic for her blog.
The only thing is to translate my English written article to Turkish. It sounds a bit weird, my mother tongue is Turkish and I am writing in English and translate it to Turkish :) Reality of internet world! Now I am asking my friend Sıla to contribute my blog :)
Here is the original:
Here is the Turkish one:
VW & Audi in dispute over Electric Vehicle strategy
Tuesday, January 4, 2011The sparks are flying in Germany as Volkswagen and Audi are fighting over the brand's EV strategy.
Details are sketchy, but the Financial Times Deutschland is reporting Audi wants to develop electric vehicles independently of Volkswagen. This hasn't made the parent company happy as sources have indicated VW has "frowned upon" Audi's "anarchist project."
The real problem seems to be Audi's refusal to drop the Wankel engine from the A1 e-Tron. If Audi keeps the engine, it would be a costly move as Volkswagen doesn't build a rotary engine and they'd be forced to develop it with another partner - possibly Mazda.
As we have previously reported, the A1 e-Tron features a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery which powers an electric motor that produces a continuous 45 kW (61 PS / 60 hp) and 150 Nm (111 lb-ft) of torque. It can travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on electricity alone, before a Wankel engine activates to recharge the batteries.

The most stylish car by Karl Lagerfeld
Saturday, January 1, 2011
New Year’s Eve made a bit lazy. I was relaxed and I did not post anything in my blog. I think I need to give this kind of breaks time to time :)
Before I start on my post today, I need to give some brief information. Many of you may not know anything about Karl Lagerfeld. And some of you may say exactly this “Karl who?” This is a very common thing, especially in car blogs. So who is Karl? Karl Lagerfeld is a German fashion designer living in Paris. He is well known as creative director of fashion brand Chanel. Also he owns his own brand Lagerfeld and also worked for Fendi. That’s enough for a car blog. Please Google him for more information, I am not a fashion expert.
Recently, Volkswagen introduced a new package called Style for Polo and Golf. Usual this “style” named packages are totally mess and dull! In addition, Polo and Golf are quite boring cars. So, combination of dull package with boring cars, ends up with a total boredom instead of freedom. However this time, everything has totally changed! Style package is introduced by Karl Lagerfeld. I know it does not sound interesting but in terms of fashion, these two cars are the most stylish cars currently on sale :) Nothing else on market is being introduced by Lagerfeld so, they are not stylish enough. Many people buy car for their “style”.
After this campaign, Audi A1 and A3 look like really boring :) Sorry but Audi A1 and A3 do not offer something special and stylish. Just four circles! If you want to drive something stylish buy Polo and Golf with Style package.
Style package offers light alloy wheels, fog lamps, tinted side and rear windows and STYLE logo (this is really nice.) Style Plus package offers a sunroof or panorama roof and new alloy wheels. In commercial he is being suprised by VW brand as it is made in Germany. He also adds, these cars should be in Paris!
Volkswagen's approach to Black Cab: Let's make it left hand drive!
Thursday, December 23, 2010
I have just recently found a concept vehicle from Volkswagen and I decided to share with you. No, I didn’t hit my head to wall and decided to change the concept of my blog. This concept is London Taxi concept. I really don’t know whether it will be production or not but even this possibility made me happy.
If you ever visited UK, you might have noticed the lovely Black Cab. They look very nostalgic from outside and they do their best to make you feel the nostology inside your internal organs. Because, their rear suspension is still leaf spring. The same suspension system which can be seen in Gladiator movie (Movie took place in BC times)! Each terrain alteration is directly sent your spinal cord with no point. I have no idea why they still use this meaningless technology in 2010! Probably the answer is; it is cheap.
It looks amazing from each angle. I really like the current Black Cab but there is no need to accommodate something which deserve place in British Museum. Actually I was expecting to see rear hinged doors for better comfort. Black Cab’s main advantage is spacious interior and Rolls Royce style rear doors! VW just missed that point. And it should be right hand drive!Pictures' Copyrights

VW EV Taxi Concept Makes Its Debut In London
Thursday, December 16, 2010A conceptual twist on a British institution has been unveiled in the form of the Volkswagen Taxi Concept – the latest evolution in a series of 'World Taxis' based on the underpinnings of the forthcoming UP! city car.
The man behind the project, Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design at Volkswagen, was present in Central London earlier today to unveil the car.
Designed to meet the challenges faced by vehicles in modern cities, with ever tighter restrictions on space and emissions, the Volkswagen Taxi Concept is powered by an electric motor fed by lithium-ion batteries. With a capacity of 45 kW/h the batteries allow the electric motor to generate a maximum power output of 115 PS, translating to a theoretical top speed of 74 mph.
The range of the Volkswagen Taxi Concept is estimated at 186 miles between charges with an 80 per cent charge taking around one hour to complete.
The Concept, which measures 3,730 mm in length, 1,680 mm in width and 1,600 mm in height, is shorter than the current smallest Volkswagen, the Fox. However its long wheelbase and minimal front and rear overhangs allow it to have a spacious cabin with room for two adults to be seated in comfort plus an allocated area for luggage. At the front, the driving environment is similarly spacious, an impression emphasised by the large glass area.
The theme running throughout the vehicle is simplicity, with an elegant, clutter-free look to the interior. The major functions of the vehicle including climate, entertainment and fare information are all grouped onto one touchscreen display mounted next to the driver. In the back a similar screen relays information to the passengers on their route and their immediate environment. Despite its modest size, the Volkswagen Taxi Concept feels luxurious, with use of cream leather and individual, as opposed to bench, seats.
The styling draws on that of the UP!, Space UP! and Space UP! Blue concept cars and features deliberately tongue-in-cheek details such as the silver Union Jack on the roof and the City of London's coat of arms resplendent on either side of the vehicle as well as on the dashboard.
Elegant daytime running lights mounted within the headlight units are joined by a distinctive 'Taxi' light on the roof. This has two settings – it glows green, indicating when it's free and red when it's not.
At the rear the light units are integrated into the 60:40 split tailgate, behind which are a pair of cubbies to house the belongings of the driver.
While the concept doesn't adhere to current legal requirements regulating taxis in London it does offer an insight into the possibility of a future small, efficient taxi that offers an alternative to conventional fuels.
VW Unveil Electric E-Bora in China
Tuesday, December 14, 2010Volkswagen unveiled a new electric vehicle, the E-Bora, Tuesday in Changchun, northeast China's Jilin Province.
The company plans to trial the E-Bora next year in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, and Changchun City, Jilin, with a full market launch in 2013.
The Bora is stocked with VW’s Blue-e-Motion Li-ion batteries rated at 26.5kWH whilst the batteries weigh in at 315kg including their cooling systems.
The E-Bora's traction motor was developed by Sanyo with batteries supplied by BYD. VW are also working with various other battery suppliers to find the optimal one.
Audi aims to be luxury EV leader; plug-in hybrid due in 2014
Tuesday, November 23, 2010Audi has big plans for its electric vehicle business.
"By 2020, we want to be the leading premium seller of electric vehicles," Franciscus van Meel, Audi's manager for electric mobility strategy, said at a recent technical workshop at the company's headquarters here.
"We will successively bring out a variety of hybrid models and electric vehicles, such as our first plug-in hybrid in 2014," he said, without sharing more details on the plug-in hybrid.
Audi's alternative powertrain plan includes: full-hybrid versions of the A8 upper-premium sedan and Q5 SUV, both due in late 2011; a hybrid A6 that is likely to arrive in 2012; plus a range of high-priced electric cars starting with the limited-edition battery-powered e-tron version of the R8 supercar in 2012.
Audi set up the e-tron division to develop and produce EVs. The brand's electric-car approach is different from that of rival BMW AG, which is developing the smaller so-called Megacity Vehicle designed for urban commuting. The Megacity Vehicle is due to launch in 2013.
"Today we're assuming that our sales of Audi e-tron electric cars will rise to a six-figure volume by 2020," van Meel said.
By 2020, Audi wants to increase the efficiency of its internal combustion engines by 30 percent and wants 5 percent of the brand's lineup to be electric, Michael Dick, Audi's board member for technology, said earlier this year.
To help it meet that goal, Audi recently opened a 65 million euro (about $89 million), 14,000-square-meter electric-drive development and test center at its headquarters. It plans to hire 840 people to help develop electric powertrains and batteries.
Audi parent Volkswagen AG wants the group to be No. 1 in hybrid and electric cars before the end of the decade, increasing its EV market share to 3 percent of its forecast global sales of 10 million vehicles by 2018.
Globally, VW Group plans to launch a full-electric version of its Up minicar, the E-Up, E-Golf and E-Jetta in 2013. VW recently announced they will invest $71.2 billion focused on hybrids and electric vehicle development over the next 4 years.
Key, just a Key!
Monday, November 22, 2010
For quite long time, car keys became so boring. Most of the look very similar to VW and the rest of them are quite boring. Despite the improvement in design the car keys did not change that much. You buy a Ferrari and you end up with a stupid looking key. The Mercedes has the change key, commercial to Maybach! BMW offers a very nicely designed key. The most interesting and the post came was introduced by Mercedes as usual! This is matching their brand identity. Swarovski crystal covered key for Japanese market. It is not offering anything more just more crystals and bigger price tag!
The most cleaver key I have ever seen is from Land Rover. I know you won’t be that excited for a car but in daily basis, the stupidly designed key can turn your life into hell. Especially in case of emergency! Unless they don’t cause, they look terrible. I didn’t see a key which is offering the both. I am sure no one will ever change own car for a key but they supposed to look good and function seamlessly. And Land Rover made it, just watch the video and you will the cleaver design. Especially replacing the battery looks very easy! That’s one of the most annoying thing in a car key.Pictures', Videos' Copyrights

VW to invest 51.6bn euros in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
Saturday, November 20, 2010Volkswagen says it plans to invest 51.6 billion euros ($A71.2 billion) in the next four years to develop new models and attain its objective of becoming the world's top car maker by 2018.
With another 10.6 billion euros ($A14.63 billion) to be invested by its joint ventures in China, the German car maker said it aims to "expand and modernise its entire product line across all of its brands".
The investments, to come from the company's own funds, will focus on hybrids and electric vehicles, where it lags behind Japan's Toyota, which it hopes to unseat as the top global car maker within seven years.
Last year Volkswagen said it planned to invest 25.8 billion euros ($A35.6 billion) between 2010 and 2012.
Volkswagen steered around being significantly damaged by the global crisis, thanks in large part to continued boom the Chinese car market, and was sitting on a cash pile of 19.6 billion euros ($A27.05 billion) at the end of September.
The company, which owns nine brands, is in the process of absorbing a tenth, luxury sports car maker Porsche.
Hard VW vs. Soft VW

VW EOS, this car has never been a big sensation in automotive industry. I don’t know why it could not manage to receive enough attention. Most of the people never heard of it either. VW’s metal roof, coupe / cabrio model! Well, that’s a SLK for normal people :) But normal people did not like it that much. I didn’t like it either, Murat Günak designed the EOS but it was not a car like Peugeot 206 or Mercedes SLK. Those cars were also designed by Günak too! But they look much better. EOS was a very boring car and sales proofed that either.Eventually VW revealed the face-lifted version which looks much better the current model. I am more optimistic for EOS this time. Interior is much better designed also. Interestingly VW was not happy enough with EOS and they announced cabrio Golf! I am sure you will be asking what’s wrong with this. Honestly I tried to find a matching example for this weird decision but I couldn’t make it.
EOS is a cabrio car which is positioned in Golf’s segment (C Segment) and the whole marketing strategy is based on offering a coupe / cabrio Golf alternative. Now VW will offer cabrio Golf, that would be a better alternative for Golf cabrio, instead of EOS. I think they will use soft top and probably a bit cheaper (I never seen a cheap Golf) and they will solve the problem.
EOS will be expensive and hard top cabrio, Golf cabrio will be cheaper soft top cabrio. VW will say this is a very good way of differentiating the products. However the reality will be, EOS and Golf cabrio will eat their market share as a result of overlapping with each other. In some market, VW will not import EOS or Golf cabrio. Dealers will have problem to differentiate the cars, consumers will be confused and this chain reaction will go forever. Pictures' Copyrights

A detailed explanation for the problem of German Cars
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
For very long time I was trying understand what is wrong with German cars. I didn’t make mistake while writing, German cars. There is always something missing with them, I could not understand but German cars never have the same taste with Italian cars. Of course, I am not licking cars to identify their differences. I am pretty sure that all German cars would taste the same :)A German car always handles well, the automatic screen wipers always works with the same amount of rain, engine always makes the same sound, all the parts inside the car have the same millimetric distance within each other. This combination of perfection obsession is not matching with human being because we are not perfect and we want things different. I think the best explanation for German cars is they are like trains. They are doing what they are supposed to do, trains cannot change travel anywhere else than railway and they always follow a route.
The Italian cars are like pizza, each pizza is a unique dish. It is nearly impossible to have the same pizza, even if you manage to have the same one you cannot eat in the same way. All the mozzarella cheese will try to go somewhere else, you will try to make some weird moves to eat the slice and some vegetables will fell on your trousers while you are trying to clean your trousers, your elbow will hit to pizza. Basically each time you try to eat an Italian food, you will have a new adventure like in Italian cars. Each Italian car is totally unique, I don’t know how they manage to do it but they are excellent at producing each car unique. There is no identical twin of a Ferrari 458 or Alfa Romeo MiTo or Fiat 500. Even if the factory is robotized, their supplier may not be robotized and their production technique might be influence the employees emotional conditions.
Therefore each Italian car is like a sculpture, you cannot find the same one. And Italian cars do not react as you wished, try to control a Ferrari 599 GTO. Jeremy Clarkson tried to do it in “Italian Job” and he failed, try to control an Alfa MiTo diesel. The electronic systems will help you but the car will control you. You will do what the car is ordering you!And lastly British cars; very basic definition, there is always something is missing. In order to proof this, just look at British taps! They have separate taps for hot and cold water. You cannot find this in other part of the world. British engineers never connect hot and cold water together, you either burn your hands or freeze your hand. There is no balance and you can face with this ugly truth even in the most prestigious hotels or in houses. Everything looks excellent, suddenly you want wash your hand, and you burn your hands!
You can find this in British cars also, everything is excellent. Design, materials, engines but you cannot have a door closing aid in a Bentley Azure. This is a very basic technology from Germans, when your door is not fully closed the hydraulic system closes for you. But you cannot have this in a Bentley Azure! This car costs more than a country and you have to close your door properly by yourself. But still I like British cars they are combination of Mr. Bean and Paul Smith shirt!Pictures' Copyrights
